Frog Splits: Do Frog Splits Help with Middle Splits?
Posted by Paul Zaichik on
Frog splits. Do these splits help with the middle split?
The short answer is that the frog splits will help you with a middle split, but doing a frog split does not guarantee that you can do a middle split or a side split. The other way around, however, if you can do a middle split or a side split or a center split, then you can also do a frog split.
Kinesiological comparison between the two types of splits.
Frog split can be considered a partial side split. In other words, some of the muscles that have been stretched in a side split (middle split) are also stretched in a frog split. But even if you could do a Frog split. If the muscles that are NOT being stretched in the Frog split are tight, this will prevent you from doing a full center split (middle split).
If you are familiar with the EasyFlexibility system, you already know that we focus on each muscle in any single skill by isolating it. Therefore, it's important to know which muscles work here. Kinesiologically, a frog split works Adductor Longus, Adductor Brevis, adductor Magnus and one of the hip flexors the Pectineus.

The difference between a Frog Split and a Full Side (Middle) Split
The difference between a Frog split and a full side split is the following. In a Frog split, your knees are bent and, in a middle split (side split) your knees are extended. This is important because when the knees are extended, the hamstrings also get stretched. Of course, in a side split, the focus shifts a lot more to the middle hamstring as opposed to the lateral hamstring. And one of the adductors that crosses the knee, the Gracilis.
Because both the hamstrings and the Gracilis are flexors of the knee with the knees flexed, as in the Frog split, the muscles are shortened. Here the muscles are not really being stretched. But when the knee extends, the muscles are lengthened and thus get stretched, like in the side split.

Why can I do a Frog but NOT a Full Side Split?
So, if you got your Frog split. And now you're wondering why you still cannot do your side split. That is the reason. Because there are various muscles that need to be flexible to get a split. As you can see from the anatomy of a side split, two of these muscles are stretched with straight knees, or extended knees. And the rest are stretched with bent knees.
So the hamstrings, specifically the medial hamstrings, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus as well as the gracilis, cross a knee and flex. And this means that when the knees are extended these muscles are extra stretched.
So if you are able to do a fog. But you are not able to do a full side split. That means that you have an issue with one or all of those muscles. The good news is that with the Zaichik Stretching Techniques, you can target those muscles, isolate them and very quickly go from a full fog to a full split.
But if you are working on your frog split where you target your Gracilis and the middle hamstrings you will get your side split faster. In the EasyFlexibility Side Splits programs we target these and other muscles responsible for a side split to help you get your split fast, safe and easy.
