Why I'm able to hike long distances without injuries or feeling my muscles and joints. No, it's not because I stretched before and after the hike. I don't do that, and I do not even recommend that, especially stretching before the hike. After the hike is fine.

What I do recommend is off trail training at home during the time when you're not hiking. When I went on a long hike with one of my professors back in college. I learned quite a lot. One thing that I learned and saw right in front of my face was that his strength, endurance and flexibility which he trained off the trail made him almost bulletproof on the trail.

And this is compared to younger people like me, 40 years younger than him at the time. A lot of us worked out, but he trained specifically for hiking. While we did the push ups and pull ups that did not transfer into an ability to hike with enjoyment without pain or injuries or stiffness or any other unpleasant sensations. This was a professor who was well versed in kinesiology, Biomechanics, Motor learning, Sports physiology. He knew what he was doing. We didn't, but he did.

As an avid hiker, he knew that training off trail is what is going to allow him to enjoy his hike. His training that involved primarily exercises which supported his ability to walk long distances, over uneven terrain.

The training consists of very hike specific strength and flexibility exercises.

So the training consists of very specific strength and flexibility exercises. The muscles that moves the body in a hike. The joints that need to be properly protected while hiking. The program that I have designed being a Kinesiologist is based a lot on the knowledge that he gave me and on a lot of my own personal hiking experience.

What sets this program apart from any other training program out there is the use of the Zaichik Stretching Techniques and specific skill supporting exercises based on Kinesiology. You might have heard everybody giving advice to stretch. But, stretching before the hike just cools the body down, relaxes the body and it's the opposite of what you want to do when you're warming up for a hike. I do support the relaxed stretches at the end of the hike, of course, but relaxed stretches don't make you flexible very fast. On the other hand, Zaichik Stretching Techniques do.

Why you need to be flexible for hiking. How is that going to help you?

You might be reading this and asking yourself, why do I need to be flexible? I'm not a ballet dancer. I'm not a gymnast. Why do I need flexibility?

More flexibility is not just doing back bridges and splits. When you are hiking, you're not walking on even terrain. And there are times when your feet, your ankles, your knees and your hips need to move past the ranges which a person is used to when they do normal walking. The more range of motion you have, the more protected your muscles and joints are, the less they are prone to fatigue and the less you are prone to getting injured.

Now from experience, when I started adding specific exercises for hiking, my hiking experience has quite improved. And I did flexibility exercises, but they were not hike specific. I was able to do a split. But split is not hiking specific training. So after my hike with the professor, which was one of the longest hikes that I have ever done. Literally having felt every part of my body from the waist down. Muscles and joints and ligaments and tendons. I realized that I needed to prepare myself for the next hike, which I did, and it helped a lot.
